What Lies Beneath: Creek Chub

This original 20” x 26” encaustic painting captures the bold presence of a Creek Chub moving through layered blue-green water. Created with molten beeswax and damar resin, the surface has luminous depth and rich texture that shifts beautifully in natural light.

Sand shoreline sand and genuine Petoskey stones are embedded into the lower portion of the piece, grounding the fish in an authentic Great Lakes setting.

The Creek Chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) is one of the most widespread native minnows in North America. Often found in cool streams, tributaries, and inland lakes, they’re known for their strong, streamlined bodies and distinctive dark lateral stripe. Males develop brighter coloration during spawning season and build impressive gravel nests—sometimes large enough for other fish species to use. Though small compared to game fish, Creek Chubs are vital to freshwater ecosystems and are a familiar sight to anglers and stream explorers alike.
