This original 14” round Lake Sturgeon encaustic painting celebrates one of the Great Lakes’ most ancient and fascinating fish. Often called a “living fossil,” lake sturgeon have been swimming these waters for over 150 million years. With their armored plates, whisker-like barbels, and slow, powerful movement, they’re truly unlike any other fish in the lakes.
This piece captures that prehistoric strength beneath swirling blue-green water.
Created with molten beeswax and damar resin, the surface has beautiful depth and glow. Real shoreline sand and embedded Petoskey stones are layered into the bottom edge, giving it an authentic Great Lakes texture and a natural, sculptural feel.
